Gabriel's Inferno

Gabriel's Inferno - Sylvain Reynard Couldn't finish it. The writing was weird. I'm sure the author used a thesaurus to change the words to make them bigger/more impressive but didn't realise the new words had subtly different meanings that made the book read like a very bad Google translation. The quote from [b:The Princess Bride|21787|The Princess Bride |William Goldman|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327903636s/21787.jpg|992628] kept running through my head, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”Both the MC's were psychotic. They had such wild changes in their personalities from one paragraph to the next that I got whiplash trying to keep up. Julia was a boring, frigid, schizoid, vapid, goody-two-shoes. The assertion that this girl was accepted at Harvard is an insult to anyone who ever attended a university anywhere in the world. She's an idiot. I couldn't stand her. Although I appreciated the effort and knowledge required to relate the story and characters to Dante's epic poem, I found the constant name-dropping of literary masterpieces, expensive clothing, accessories, fine alcohols, etc, etc to be annoyingly pretentious. I found this book and the two lovers to be totally unsexy. I read it because book 2 is nominated in the GR Choice Awards in Best Romance for 2012. But I won't be reading the sequel and I will seriously cry if it wins that category. The following two reviews reflect exactly how I felt when reading this book:http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/375206664http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/253436877
